Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based on the premise that good health depends upon a normally functioning nervous system. "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, which means "effective treatment by hand". Chiropractic stresses the idea that the causes of many diseases are in the body's inability to adapt to its environment. It addresses these causes not through drugs and chemicals, but through locating and adjusting musculoskeletal areas of the body.
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and millions of nerves. Your brain is protected by the skull, your spinal cord, and by the 24 moving bones of the spine. Daily activity or injury can cause these spinal bones to lose their normal position or motion which results in irritation to the spinal nerve roots. These displacements, called subluxations, may cause malfunctions in the body. Chiropractors seek to re-establish the spinal mobility to help the body operate more efficiently and comfortably.
Doctors of Chiropractic do not elect to use drugs or surgery in their practice.
Our belief is that there is a reason for every pain and/or symptom produced by your body. Our bodies are highly intelligent. Pain is a way of our bodies communicating to us that we need to change something in our lifestyle and/or have something fixed. An individual may choose to cover up the pain and/or symptoms with a prescription or over the counter medication but then the problem is not being corrected and eventually the problem will return considerably worst and/or one will get numerous side effects from the chosen medication. Chiropractors believe that correcting the cause of the problem provides significant long-term benefits over only treating the symptoms.
It is much easier and cost effective to keep a problem from returning, than to treat it only periodically when it flares up. For this reason, patients in our office are instructed on correct sleeping and lifting positions. In addition, incorrect postural habits are evaluated and instructions are given in regards to correcting work stations and other aspects of active daily living that influence your muscles and spine.
